Stephen's Gallery

Stephen Bruce has had a Goldentone 1351, also known as a “9-60”, for many years and kindly supplied this gallery of shots, as well as a very neatly drafted full circuit (54kb gif).

A Brief History of one Goldentone 9-60

Stephen Bruce:

This amplifier has 2 independent 30w valve amplifiers, it was produced by Rose Morris, it has tremelo, and spring reverb. The channels can be joined by pulling the left volune knob.

I have owned the unit since 1972. Before this it was owned by Jim Watkins, who gigged it and probably owned since new. It has been looked after very well. It originally had 2x Rola 12UEG speakers - one failed 1991 was chucked (then not knowing about reconing) and temporarily replaced a low wattage 12”.

Between 1972 and 1991 a 6DQ6 was replaced and one of the 6DQ6 cathode electros turned into a confetti generator. The amplifier was not used from 1995 to 2002.

In 2002 I started using the amplifier again. It generated more noise than signal (a bit like the Internet :-) - mostly mains hum. This was fixed by replacing all the electrolytic caps. The large can electros were disconnected, but left in situ. One of the power stages was running hot - faulty 6DQ6. All the 6DQ6's were replaced. A Celestion G12 Vintage 30 replaced the 1991 temporary speaker. The amplifier still has most of its 12AX7's. The reverb send and receiver have been taped to their mounts as ceramic housing have broken mounting fingers. You will notice two layers of felt in the speaker cabinet, one hung to be about halfway between front and back, and the second close to the back.

The brass handles seem standard.

As an apparently “good idea” I actually tried ball feet of exactly this type on a cab, and soon removed them again. They don't roll well under load and have a very small pressure-point which damaged timber floors. -rr
